Your auto insurance rates can be lower if you are a student. There are several ways that getting an education can lower your premium rates including grades, where you live, whether you have a car at school, which organizations you join, and even what degree you earn.
There are auto insurance discounts if a student earns good grades. Usually discounts start at a 3.0 GPA and even better discounts are awarded for higher grades. Insurers believe that making good grades shows responsibility and statistics show that responsible drivers get into fewer accidents. If you are continuously a student you can usually be covered under your parent's auto insurance until age 25. Normally this rate will be lower than buying insurance on your own. But it's a good idea to compare the rates of a company that gives a special discount to students on their own.
A resident student, one who goes to college away from home, can get discounts because the insurer assumes that you will be driving less. This discount applies if you don't take a car with you to school and the school is a certain number of miles away. Even if you must take your car to school your school might be in an area where rates are low. If you have a choice of which neighborhood to live in then look for one that has lower rates. Another way to lower your auto insurance rates is to prove that you are driving only a short distance to school, that you are walking or taking a school shuttle to class.
If you get renters insurance to cover your personal belongings while you are away at school then ask if buying your renters insurance and auto insurance through the same insurance company will garner you a discounted premium. While you are enrolled in school you can join organizations that might give you an opportunity to lower your rates. Membership in an honor society, sorority or fraternity might qualify. Professional organizations for certain professions such as engineers may allow student members. If so, then they may have auto insurance discounts available for members. Even joining Mensa could qualify you for lower premium rates.
When you finish your degree or enter a profession you might be considered a lower risk and as a result get lower premium rates. Degrees in math, science and engineering can get you a discount. Certain professions such as doctors, teachers, and engineers get lower rates throughout their careers.
Talk with your agent or insurance company to see what discounts they can offer you. Pursuing your education is its own reward. But a discount on your auto insurance is a nice bonus.
